Suntech Achieves Its Highest 20 percent Conversion Efficiency of Multicrystalline Silicon Solar Cell PERC Technology

Presently, the solar industry faces two driving demands that seem to serve cross purposes – achieving the highest possible efficiency, while lowering manufacturing costs. 

The Transparency Market Research (TMR), a market intelligence company based in the United States, forecasts in its recent report “Solar Photovoltaic Installation Market – Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2012 – 2018,” the global solar photovoltaic installation market will grow at a CAGR of 10.7% between 2012 and 2018. 

According to the report, the PV installation market will be valued at US$145.9 billion by 2018 and the key market players operating in the global solar photovoltaic installation such as Trina Solar Ltd., Canadian Solar Inc, Bosch Solar Energy AG, Yingli Green Energy Holdings Co. Ltd., Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd., and First Solar Inc.

According to the average conversion efficiency of the mass production of multicrystalline silicon PERC solar cells, 72 cells module will reach 330W, which is 15W higher than the normal 315W module. 

What is PERC technology and why it is needed?

The Passivated Emitter and Rear Cell (PERC) defines a solar cell architecture that differs from the standard cell architecture that has been in use for three decades and that is usually featured in all photovoltaic manuals.

The objective of scientists being to get the most of the electrons out of the solar cells, the PERC architecture essentially enables to improve light capture near the rear surface and to optimize electrons capture.

The PERC cell structure enables manufacturers to achieve higher efficiencies than with standard solar cells which are reaching their physical limits.
