Most of the cities in developing countries, particularly in India, are highly polluted. For example, in India there are close to 18 million petrol powered two wheeler and about 1.5 million petrol and diesel powered three wheeler and their population is growing at a healthy rate of about 15% per annum, as reported by NARI.
In fact it is a common sight in developing countries that during traffic jams in congested areas of cities these vehicles produce tremendous pollution. The main reasons are the air and noise pollution caused by transport vehicles especially petrol-powered two and three wheeler mostly called auto-rickshaws.
An E-rickshaw could provide a non-polluting and a very silent alternate transport system for urban and rural areas of India. The high performance and durability of these E-rickshaws is the reason that more and more people are getting associated with it.
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, yesterday attended a function organised by Bharatiya Micro Credit for distribution of e-rickshaws in Lucknow.

He added that this is happening despite the global recession. He said that the primary objectives of his Government are the welfare of the poor, and employment for the youth.
The Prime Minister said youth should become job creators instead of job seekers. He added that his Government has taken a series of steps to fulfill these objectives. In this context, he mentioned that 2 crore people had benefited from the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, in less than a year of the scheme’s launch.
The Prime Minister said that for the people who are getting e-rickshaws today, it is not just a simple change from pedal rickshaw to e-rickshaw, but an entire transformative process. The Prime Minister flagged off the rally of 2100 e-rickshaws.
There are various benefits of these E-rickshaws like- It is an Eco-friendly rickshaw and its use will help in reducing the pollution level. These electric rickshaws have a very simple mechanism. These battery rickshaws run on the electricity which is easily available and can multi-sourced. Thus it has highest degree of energy resilience.

It is a high-energy efficient vehicle as it doesn’t consume energy when not in use. It has a very reasonable cost of recharging due to which one can easily maintain it. Basically, this e-rickshaw is the solution to all the problems faced by the people who belong to the poor section of our society. Also, this electric rickshaw is a great business opportunity for all small-scale businessmen.
With enlightened Government policies of allowing only such vehicles in the crowded urban areas, the cities of developing countries can become pollution-free and livable. (Source: NarendraModi.in)
