Is PlayStation Vue the Next Big Gaming Console?

Many people have confused ideas about what Sony’s PlayStation Vue really is. My 12-year-old son was convinced until recently that PlayStation Vue might be Sony’s next-generation gaming console. So, you can imagine his disappointment that it is an internet TV service that will use our internet bundle to give us access to television networks like ACC Network, Paramount network, etc. Let’s clear up the confusion concerning PlayStation Vue.

What is PlayStation Vue?

Vue started out as a service that came with PlayStation consoles. But over recent years, it has evolved considerably and is now a common choice among the growing cord-cutter movement. But what is it? PlayStation Vue allows users to stream content without needing a cable or satellite connection. It allows you to stream movies, sports, news, and even live TV using your internet connection. It is Sony’s best offering for the cord-cutting generation.

What Devices Support PlayStation Vue?

A large number of live-streaming devices support PlayStation Vue, which include the following:

  • Roku
  • Apple TV
  • Amazon Fire
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Web browsers

Of course, PlayStation Vue is always accessible on PlayStation3 and PlayStation4.

What Does PlayStation Vue Offer?

Think of Vue as a DVR that works both inside your home and while you’re on the go. This helps ensure you have access to your entertainment anytime, anywhere. The DVR function comes with plenty of storage space to store your favorite content. The platform also comes without any recording conflicts, meaning multiple users can record TV shows, movies, or other content on multiple profiles.

Vue also comes with a sizeable On-Demand content library. In addition, it has a great mix of channel-plans that offer both live broadcasts and regular programming. You can even get premium channels like HBO, Showtime, and Starz, whether individually or as part of your channel plan. Most importantly, you do not need a PlayStation console to be able to access Vue.

Are There Commercials on Vue?

Vue gives you access to more or less the same content that networks broadcast on satellite or cable TV. This includes commercials along with the content you want to watch. However, if you store content in your DVR, you have no limits to fast-forward commercials. The same applies to On-Demand content. However, do bear in mind that certain channels will not allow you to fast forward commercials. These include FXX, FX, and FOX.

Is There a Free Trial Period?

You will be happy to learn that Vue does indeed come with a free trial period. This helps to allow you time to make up your mind about whether you want to commit to the service. The platform offers one trial period per customer, lasting 14 days. You can cancel at any time, but there will be no refunds if you cancel after the free trial period has expired.

How Much Do PlayStation Vue Plans Cost?

Sony offers a number of channel plans as well as standalone premium channels to its subscribers. The platform currently offers 4 packages, which vary in cost based on which service tier you choose to go with. Vue offers the following channel plans:

  • Vue Access: over 45 channels starting at $50 per month.
  • Vue Core: over 60 channels starting at $55 per month.
  • Vue Elite: over 90 channels starting at $65 per month.
  • Vue Ultra: over 90 channels plus premium options like HBO, Starz, and Showtime, starting at $85 per month.

Blackouts on Vue

PlayStation Vue is essentially a TV provider service and entertainment medium, even though it does not need traditional cable or satellite TV. This means that Vue must respect and adhere to the different stipulations agreed on between networks, studios, channels, and sports leagues.

A sports blackout may be common, thanks to national broadcasting rights. Many studios or networks have the right to block programming in select markets or on other channels or networks. Often, local sports events stay restricted to local channels, with Vue broadcasting local sports events on regional channels.

Bandwidth and Video Quality

Vue allows you to stream high definition content in HD. It comes with adaptive bitrate streaming, which means you get the best possible resolution on your current bandwidth. Sony recommends a minimum bandwidth of 10Mbps for the best experience. I had to call up Spectrum internet support and ask for an upgrade on my internet plan. So before you buy a subscription to PlayStation Vue, check that you have at least 10Mbps in bandwidth.
