In urban areas, the dense concentration of business, industry, and housing results in large quantities of waste being generated in a relatively small geographic area.
Composting is the natural process of decomposition and recycling of organic material into a humus rich soil amendment known as compost.
It could become a sustainable solution for the waste disposal in urban areas.
Food waste that is not composed generally goes directly to a landfill that leads to environmental problem.
Once in the landfill, organic matter may react with other materials and create toxic leachate.
Food waste placed in an airtight landfill stops the earth’s natural cycle of decomposition. This cycle plays a crucial role in the health of our environment.
Fruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains, bread, unbleached paper napkins, coffee filters, eggshells, meats and newspaper can be composted. If it can be eaten or grown in a field or garden, it can be composted.
Plastic, stainless steel and ceramic countertop containers and compostable plastic bags used by most people can stink, leak, require cleanup and make a mess of your kitchen.
Since, food waste has unique properties as a raw compost agent; we must strive for implementing the composting system at our home.
Three environmentalists, gardeners and inventors – Gabe, Greg and Glenn – who own a Seattle-based design agency have launched POST MODERN. It’s a green product aims to solve the food waste in an eco-friendly manner.
Some of the features of POST MODERN Composting System:
- Compostable food scrap disposal system keeps food waste out of sight —and out of smell
- It’s a better, cleaner way to collect food waste for composting
- Goes straight into curbside or backyard compost bins
- Vacuum-like seal keeps moisture and odors isolated
- Made from 100% recycled corrugated boxes
- Starter kit includes: 1 under-sink hanger, 3 (1.25 gallon) compostable caddies
- Refill pack includes: 5 compostable caddies
POST MODERN is designed to fit inside standard 30”+ wide sink-base cabinets with standard-depth sinks.
It’s a moisture and smell proof for 10 days and can be hanged under the sink and becomes out of sight for visitors.
