Solves battery limitations and significantly extends power time in Smartphones, Tablets, Laptops and Drones!
Intelligent Energy has unveiled a number of consumer electronic prototypes powered by an embedded hydrogen fuel cell, to significantly extend the up time of the devices and provide a solution to the battery life conundrum facing consumers today.
The prototypes will be on display throughout the week at a special Intelligent Energy Embedded World event at CES 2016 and follows on from the company’s announcement on 15 December 2015 that it has developed a prototype hydrogen fuel cell powered range extender for drones.
According to Intelligent Energy, by embedding a hydrogen fuel cell into a phone, drone, tablet or laptop, consumers of energy can become producers of energy and have the freedom of instant energy for their electronic devices when and where they want it.
The fuel cell technology fits into the existing hardware. There is no need for any existing battery technology to be removed to accommodate the fuel cell, but instead the two works side by side. Intelligent Energy recognizes the importance of energy on demand as consumers are more connected and mobile than ever.
What is a Fuel Cell?
A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that produces electricity without combustion. The optimal energy carrier for fuel cells is hydrogen (which can be extracted from methanol, natural gas, water or petroleum products). When hydrogen is combined with oxygen (from air) it produces electrical energy.
The conversion process is environmentally benign: only heat and water are emitted as by-products. Environmentally, hydrogen is the optimal energy carrier for fuel cells, because fuel cells that run on hydrogen have zero emissions. By the nature of its electrochemical reaction, a fuel cell can be more than twice as efficient as an internal combustion engine.
A conventional engine burns fuel to create heat and in turn converts heat into mechanical energy and finally electricity. A fuel cell produces electricity, water and heat directly from hydrogen and oxygen.
Fuel cells are like batteries in that they are electrochemical devices, but unlike batteries do not need recharging and will continue to operate as long as they are provided with fuel (hydrogen).
