Many Researchers around the world work on developing biodegradable plastics with the hopes of improving the environment.
The petroleum-based plastics has an adverse effect on the eco-system due to the use of oil in their manufacturing and take up space in landfills, while biodegradable plastics can be synthesized in bacteria or plants.
Biodegradable plastic also has the potential to be disposed of in a way that is less damaging to the environment. Its use encompasses the agriculture, food packing to biomedical devices and tableware.

According to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), between 22 and 43 percent of plastic consumed globally finds its way into landfills.
Biodegradable resins could help to bring this number down, reducing one of the longest lasting impacts of the plastic use.

Green Dot offers a full line of biobased and compostable materials so that everyone can contribute and assist for a more sustainable world.
It aims to improve the people’s lives through its research, invention, and a creation of renewable, biobased resins, bioplastic and biocomposite pellets.
The products of Green Dot could play an important role in reducing pollution, waste, and amount of methane gas emitted from landfills.
The biodegradable resins are extruded or injection-molded in much the same way as traditional plastics. Processing temperatures are often lower than with traditional plastics, which can lead to energy savings, says Green Dot.
“Our new Terratek biodegradable biocomposite offers unique functional and aesthetic attributes with a lighter environmental footprint compared to horticulture containers currently in use,” said Mark Remmert – Green Dot Bioplastics CEO.
Terratek BD2114 from Green Dot Bioplastics, made from 80 percent reclaimed and 80 percent biobased material, is a renewable and biodegradable alternative to traditional plastic pots and it could reduce greenhouse water consumption by as much as 600%.
Green Dot originally targeted the pet supplies and toys markets — where there are mounting consumer concerns about toxic chemicals. Now the company has moved into durable goods and is hoping to expand into the world of packaging.
The company has partnered with the popular 90s rock band Pearl Jam and Sea-Lect Plastics to manufacture a biodegradable luggage tag in 2015.
