Whenever you step onto a bus, whether a city bus, a tour bus, a shuttle, a school bus, etc., you are entrusting your safety to the bus driver and the owner of the bus. For some reason, we feel safe and secure on a bus; so much so that many buses do not have or require seat belts. But even when in a bus, accidents do happen.
When involved in a bus accident, the consequences can be significant, possibly even more so than a typical car accident. There are more victims, more responsible parties, and injuries can potentially be much more serious because of the lack of safety equipment like airbags and seat belts.
LEADer Harish, a student of KHK college who was a participant of LEAD Prayana 2015, was motivated to achieve something at his field of expertise. He noticed the poor safety of road in India and increasing accidents. Therefore he thought of contributing to society using his technical knowledge. He created a smart vehicle with wireless charging, automatic dim and dip of headlights and safety system for drivers of vehicles. This would ensure the safety of the travelers.
Innovation is all about the opportunity given to creative brains. When you see Harish Gadagin, you would only see just a college going student but this young man has created an unique solution for buses that would ensure passengers’ and the driver’s safety.
His wireless charger for a battery powered bus works with the technology of mutual induction. Apart from being environment-friendly, the device would also have automatic dim and dip. The ingenious safety measure designed by him, which uses rack and pinion method, would pull back the driver’s and passengers’ seats on collision.
A whopping 1,37,000 people were killed in road accidents in 2013 alone. Innovations like Harish’s, if implemented, would make a marked decrease in the number of people we lose to vehicular accidents. But projects like these also need a push from NGOs and other organisations, so that they can make their way up from resource scarce corners of the nation.
Harish’s project became a reality because of the LEAD program, which provided him with funding and technical mentorship, as well as engaging him with social issues. Explore further in Dcselead
