5 Ways How Technology is Changing How We Read

Technology continues to change, and it continues to change people including the way they do certain things like reading. It might be unbelievable, but technology is already changing the way people read, and the following are a few examples worth noting. (Image source: Pexels)

An Interactive Option

One big change technology has introduced to people in the interactive textbook or book. For a long time, the only thing you could do with the words in a book was read them on paper. Well, of course, you could also change the page, but today’s electronic readers offer much more.

All a child needs is an ePub reader for iPhone, and this child will have access to not just one book but to an overwhelming amount of books. The child can interact with the reader. He or she could learn more about the story in real-time or could join with others to discuss what he or she is reading. Children today use interactive screens, so books may not be as attractive but an e-reader is.

A Greener Way

Books are a way to pass on the information and beautiful stories to others. Books contain a wealth of knowledge, and many people had no choice but to use paper. This means reading and books aren’t as eco-friendly as they could be.

This is yet another way technology has changed reading. It has given people the opportunity to read in peace, knowing that trees were not chopped down to create the book. Many books are still printed, but the more popular e-readers get, the better for everyone who wants people to reduce their carbon footprint.

A New Language is Emerging

Technology has also created a new language that online readers know. This new language includes things like memes, shorthand texts like “lol,” and much more. People are starting to inject some of these new forms of communication into films and TV shows.

It’s becoming a part of popular culture. You can find some of these changes in books. Some of these changes make it easier to read since, most of the time, these changes make it easier to convey an idea. For example, “lol” is much easier to say than “laugh out loud,” which could help readers skim through something faster.

Scanning is More Effective

Everyone has skimmed through a book once or twice in their lives. It’s a skill that a lot of folks have mastered, but technology has taken that skill to the next level. Today’s technology presents people with shorter messages and information than ever before. When a person reads a blog post, they don’t read large passages but normally short ones. Paragraphs are getting shorter and shorter.

This is good, but it also means reading larger texts might become more challenging for today’s readers. Some great works of art contain large blocks of texts, but today’s readers might be unable to get through those texts because of the way they’re trained to absorb information today. The good thing is some folks are also turning to audiobooks. People can hear the book out loud rather than reading the texts themselves.

The Installment Read

People who are noticing that people have shorter attention spans, or are easily distracted, have introduced a new way of reading: installment reading. Those large books written by famous authors in the world are broken up.

A person can now read only a few chapters a day and come back the next day to read a little more. The book stops in specific places so that the reader is enticed to continue reading. Yes, you are probably going to take much longer to read one book, but it’s simply the best way to get through a book. Sites and e-reader books are offering this type of reading to people like you. This will ensure people still read important works for personal enjoyment or for a school report.

These are just some ways technology is changing reading habits, but there’s bound to be others, maybe some that people aren’t even aware of just yet. The changes presented here aren’t a bad thing, and they are worth paying attention to if you’re interested in new technology.
